Envisioned as a modern yet casual take on a vernacular farmhouse, this weekend retreat is embedded into a hillside on 100 acres in the Sierra Foothills. In reverence to the land, the house is designed with sustainable systems and hardy materials that can withstand dry, hot summers in a wildland-urban interface zone. In essence, it is undemanding in its detailing, unpretentious in material and color, and most importantly easy to maintain for aging inhabitants. Huddled in a blue oak grove between a lichen-covered-granite outcropping upslope and a quiet, duck-filled pond below, the house commands views of each and welcomes a peaceful flow between.
